The South China Ice Hockey League heads into its final stretch as the coming weekend rounds out the regular season with the last set of games before the playoffs. It is the usual suspects as last year’s finalists Sam Wai Raptors (defending champions) and Sapporo have secured the 1 and 2 seed respectively, while Bravo and Rula Live secured their playoff spots over last weekends games. That unfortunately means that InetAsia and China Hockey Group miss the playoffs after a hard fought season and will see each other in the consolation playoff for next year’s highly coveted first overall pick at next year’s draft.
Rula Live and Bravo still have something to play for in their last regular season game, as results will determine who will finish in the third seed spot to face Sapporo, and the fourth seed spot to face the streaking Raptors.
Sitting alone at the top of the scoring charts is Rula Live’s Jason Klotz (22 points) who is also tied for the league lead in goals (14) with Sapporo newcomer Francois Esterhuizen (20 points). The scoring title is still wide open with Bravo’s CJ Gamble and Sapporo’s assist king Justin Kuok both just one point behind Klotz (both on 21 points).
Star goalie Grant Phillips has enjoyed an outstanding season so far, posting an 8-1 record with Sam Wai and a very respectable 2.54 GAA, while Sapporo goalie Kevin Rushton holds the second best record at 6-4 with a 2.94 GAA.
The league gets down to real business on March 1st when the playoffs start, as the best-of-3 series semi-finals kick off. The one game SCIHL Final takes place on Saturday March 21st at 8:00pm in Elements shopping mall, with any and all welcome to come watch any of the games on show.
