The inaugural season of the GBIHL kicked off on the 7th of June as Macau played host to the 4 teams competing for the title of being named the Greater Bay area’s best inline hockey team. Organized and managed by Powerplay Sports and Entertainment in collaboration with the Roller Sports Federations of the Greater Bay area; the league features regional representatives from Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Macau and Foshan Shunde.
The league format consists of a round robin set of games in each location of the competing regions. At the conclusion of the 4 sets of round robin games (12 games total per team), points are tallied for each team in a league table to determine seeding for the following playoffs. Semi-finals are a best of 3 series, and the showpiece final will be a one off game to determine the champion. Macau were the host of the first leg of the league, with the next series of games taking place in Shunde from June 28th to 30th.
The opening set of games in Macau were keenly contested and an exciting round robin saw Hong Kong come out on top as they won all 3 games. This included a nail-biting win over Macau, where team HK managed to hang on for a 3-2 win.
Justin Ho Yin Yeung from the Macau team took home the MVP award for the weekend after racking up 9 points in just 3 games, and was given a set of wheels sponsored by Wheel Hub Asia for coming up as the tournaments best player. Wheel Hub will continue to gift a set of wheels to the tournament MVP at each location of the GBIHL.
The GBIHL is also supported by Bauer Hong Kong, the official equipment supplier for the GBIHL.
